There are several ways that you can add a splash of color to the front of your house.  You can plant flowers.  Add a piece of painted furniture or pretty flower pots to the porch.  Or consider taking a leap and paint the front door a fun color.  It can make an instant first impression.

Painting the front door is a relatively simple DIY project.  I gave it a go on my own house recently.  My front door had been painted black.  After years facing the elements, the dogs and my family, the paint was beginning to chip and peel.  The sad looking door was in desperate need of a facelift.  I knew I didn’t want to paint it black again.  I wanted to do something different and fun.  I asked my friends for suggestions.  Their suggestions included highlighter yellow, eggplant, turquoise and lot’s of red.  I settled on apple green.

The first order of business was prepping the door.  I started by giving it a good scrub with water and Mrs. Meyers Soap.  Then I lightly sanded the areas where the paint was peeling or chipped.  Because my front door has a window, I then had to tape around the glass and the lock-set.  Then I was ready to paint!  I chose to paint both inside and outside.  It took about three coats of paint.  If I had primed first, I’m sure it would have taken less.  But since I was painting over black, it took three.

I think it turned out great!  And now the front of my house has a fun pop of color that will last all year no matter if the flowers are in bloom or not.

Talk to you soon!
